Sister Mary Aloysia was born Bridget O'Brien. Bridget was an older sister of James J. O'Brien. Bridget O'Brien arrived in Iowa from Limerick City on September 30, 1869, and died from Tuberculosis in 1872.

Another older sister, Annie O' Brien, also known as Sister Mary Alphonsus O'Brien, arrived in Iowa from Limerick City on May 11, 1868 and died on October 9, 1896. She is buried in the Sisters of Mercy plot at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Dubuque, Iowa.
