We start from the information that a James Joseph O'Brien was born in Limerick City about 1854, parents unknown. He is known to have emigrated about 1872. The correct family was easy enough to identify in this instance, because, unusually for that time, the child was actually christened James Joseph: over 90% of children had no middle name.

Before getting into detail about the family into which James Joseph was born, however, we like to get explanations about the surname, sources used and the local geographical divisions out of the way.
